Backup, backup, backup. Yes, we harp on the topic of backups here at ETHOSystems. This is because we are on the support end of panicked calls from clients hit by unexpected catastrophic events with their Sage software. Unexpected. Catastrophic. Two words no Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate user wants to say together. So, here’s the critical Sage 300 CRE backup information you need.
Sage 300 CRE Backup Checklist
Your IT provider is likely doing a great job backing up your data. But to keep the words “unexpected” and “catastrophic” far away, confirm a few things with them:
- Does the current backup process include the 9.5 folder located on your Sage application server in the Timberline Office share?
- If yes, challenge your IT provider once a year to restore that folder to a temporary location and review it. This folder holds your global files and customizations: security files, reports, inquiries, and the menus you use to access them.
- Does the backup process cover all data folders in your Open Company selection list? Company data may live in the Sage Timberline Office folder, or elsewhere on your network. The Open Company list shows the network path, so it’s easy to confirm with your IT provider.
- Are those backups actually viable? If your Sage application server fails, could those files restore your system? Once a year, we recommend a full recovery test: restore the folders, then migrate to a test environment using Sage’s migration protocol. Sage 300 CRE users should then confirm they can run reports and complete routine tasks in that test environment.
