Stuck in Project Management & Accounting? You’re Not Alone

We’ve all been STUCK when it comes to project management. Maybe a project is going too long without inspiration, or arguments happen over every detail or somehow things just aren’t right. You try to keep moving along or waiting for things to get better.

And then the moment arrives- you find yourself STUCK.

How do you get unstuck?
  1. Are you actually stuck in your project management, or just not moving as fast as you’d like? Speeding up a process that’s already in motion is very different from jumpstarting something that hasn’t begun at all. SOME movement is different than no movement at all.
  2. Determine what is stopping your progress. Perhaps getting “part way there” would open previously unavailable solutions. Sometimes any change is better than staying where you are, even if it’s not your final desired destination. Would breaking the project into parts allow some progress? Just being able to agree on some points can help move things along. Find and recognize what IS working in getting toward the goal. Then isolate what remains. Just having a smaller list may spur progress. And recognizing some successes will help morale for sure.  Progress isn’t “all or nothing”.
  3. Is perfection the enemy of progress? Could a slightly different solution work rather than holding out for the perfect one? Is it better to have a 90% solution today than to wait a year for 98%? Perfect what is necesary  and see what details are “good enough”. Insisting on complete perfection on every detail will certainly delay if not halt all progress. In fact, it is sometimes a technique used to keep things from happening without being blatant.
  4. What parts of the situation can you control? You may not be able to control everything, and it is important to recognize what you are able to influence. Make sure that you are not hindering progress. Knowing who is controlling each part of a situation will help you determine what you can do in order to help become unstuck. Remember that some progress is better than none, so move on what you can control.

Just a few changes in the perception of where you really are can get your project moving and back on track. Unstick yourself.
