Spreadsheets got you here. They won’t get you to your next $10M in revenue.
Every growing contractor hits the same wall: job costs live in one system, payroll in another, and the CFO spends the third week of every month reconciling all of it by hand. That’s not an accounting problem — it’s a software problem. And in 2026, the fix isn’t “better bookkeeping.” It’s the right cloud construction ERP.
Here’s how to evaluate one, without the sales fluff.
Why Contractors Outgrow Basic Accounting Software
QuickBooks and entry-level tools were built for general businesses, not job-based, multi-phase, multi-entity construction work. They can’t handle committed costs, retainage, WIP schedules, or job costing at the level of detail a bank, bonding agent, or ownership group expects. Once you’re running multiple entities, multiple states, or multiple crews, you’re not managing a business anymore — you’re managing a portfolio. Basic software wasn’t built for that job, and stretching it further only hides risk instead of managing it.
The signs you’ve outgrown your system: month-end close takes two-plus weeks, job cost reports don’t match field reality, and every custom report requires an Excel export and a prayer.

What to Actually Evaluate in a Cloud Construction ERP
Skip the feature checklist. Score every cloud construction ERP on three things:
- Accounting Strength (Job Cost Visibility)
Can you see real-time job costs—committed, actual, and projected—without waiting for month-end? A true construction ERP ties AP, payroll, purchasing, subcontract commitments, and change orders directly to the job cost ledger, so WIP and AR reports reflect what’s actually happening on-site, not what happened weeks ago.
This is a core strength of both Sage 100 Contractor and Sage Intacct Construction, although they approach it differently. Sage 100 Contractor was purpose-built for contractors with integrated estimating, job costing, payroll, and accounting in one system. Sage Intacct Construction extends those capabilities with cloud-native financial management, deeper reporting, and real-time visibility across projects and entities.
- Field-to-Office Project Management
Accounting that doesn’t communicate with the field is just a rearview mirror. Look for an ERP where daily logs, RFIs, change orders, equipment usage, and field updates flow into accounting automatically instead of relying on manual re-entry.
For many contractors, Sage 100 Contractor provides an integrated workflow between project operations and accounting. Organizations needing more advanced field collaboration can pair either Sage 100 Contractor or Sage Intacct Construction with Sage Construction Management to connect project teams, the field, and finance through a unified cloud platform. That integration is a key focus of ETHOSystems’ construction implementations.
- Multi-Entity and Dimensional Visibility
As contractors grow, they often add companies, divisions, regions, or joint ventures. Your ERP should consolidate financials without forcing you to maintain dozens of separate charts of accounts.
This is where Sage Intacct Construction stands out. Its dimensional reporting allows you to analyze performance by entity, project, customer, region, or business unit without creating unnecessary account complexity. For organizations with simpler legal structures, Sage 100 Contractor continues to deliver strong project-level financial management, while Sage Intacct Construction provides the scalability and real-time consolidation that growing multi-entity contractors require.
Sage 100 Contractor vs. Sage Intacct: Which Fits You?
| If you need… | Look at |
| Deep job costing and field-to-office integration for a single entity or a few related entities | Sage 100 Contractor |
| Multi-entity consolidation, dimensional financial reporting, and finance-team scalability across a growing portfolio | Sage Intacct |
| Both — strong field data and multi-entity finance | Sage Intacct with construction-specific configuration, or a phased path from 100 Contractor to Intacct as you scale |
Neither is a generic “one-size-fits-all” answer — and any guide that hands you one without asking how many entities and crews you’re running is selling software, not solving your problem. Not sure where you land? ETHOSystems’ self-assessment tool walks through it in a few minutes.
What to Ask Any ERP Vendor Before You Sign
- Does job costing update in real time, or on a batch/sync delay?
- Can the system produce AR aging and WIP reports by project and by entity, without manual export?
- Does payroll integrate natively, or is it a bolt-on with a separate login?
- Who implements this — a generalist reseller, or a firm that’s implemented it in construction and restoration specifically?
That last question matters more than any feature list. Software is only as good as the implementation partner behind it.
The ETHOSystems Difference
We’re a Sage VAR that works exclusively in construction and restoration finance — not a generalist reseller bolting Sage onto every industry. We implement, configure, and support both Sage 100 Contractor and Sage Intacct, and we help contractors choose teh right cloud construction ERP for their entity structure, not just their wish list.
If your close takes two weeks, your job costs lag the field, or your entities don’t roll up cleanly — that’s not a training issue. It’s an ERP fit issue.
